Now it's your chance to help create anaphylaxis awareness

By Jay Gory,    2013-06-03 04:03:03

Anaphylaxis is a condition that influences roughly 1-2 percent of the world's population. With at least 1,500 deaths caused by it each year, it's important to create awareness of it. Especially as many of those 1500 deaths can be avoided with proper knowledge and preparedness.

When American actress Julie Bowen's kid was just a toddler, he experienced a life-threatening allergic reaction as well. Now Bowen is doing her best to create awareness of the condition. The campaign or competition, sponsored by Mylan Specialty L.P., and called Raise Your Hand for Anaphylaxis Awareness, launched May 21 and is open until October 1, 2013. Everyone has the chance to raise their hand for anaphylaxis awareness. Both virtually as well as hands-on. For raising your hand virtually, go to, register or connect with your facebook/twitter account and choose your school district where you'd like to make your raised hand count. You are invited to raise your hand as well as share your reasons for doing so daily.

The four school district with the most raised hands by the end of the competition will all be receiving an educational grant of $15 000.

"This competition is an opportunity for people to share their experiences and create a groundswell of support for improved anaphylaxis awareness and preparedness in schools. That's why I'm raising my hand and asking others to join me in spreading the word. It's our stories that will motivate others to be more knowledgeable about anaphylaxis, " said Bowen.
