Swedish Indian golfer 18 holes away from becoming the Australian Masters champion

Sydney, Nov.24 : A Swedish-Indian golfer is just 18 holes away from becoming the Australian Masters champion.
A Swedish-Indian golfer is just 18 holes away from becoming the Australian Masters champion.

Daniel Chopra had one of the best rounds of his career at Huntingdale Saturday, carding a seven-under par 65 to finish the third round 12-under par and on top of the leaderboard, Fox Sports reported.

The one-man multi-national, who learned the game in Geelong, will play Sunday in a final group that promises to be as colourful as it is talented.

Chopra's fourth-round playing partner will be Australian Kurt Barnes, who produced his best form in round three despite wearing red, white and grey diamond-patterned trousers.

He promises something equally startling on Sunday, when he will be attempting to win his first tournament on the Australasian PGA tour.

Chopra's round demonstrated the vagaries of golf - and the frustration.

After five holes of Friday's second round, he and his two playing partners were all three over par.

"We all got off to nightmare starts," Chopra said. "It was like playing a pro-am - and the pro left."

A day later and it seemed nothing could go wrong.

Three birdies on the front nine, four on the back and only one bogey had Chopra thinking he only had to hit the ball for it to go in the hole.

"It was just one of those days ... every time I had the opportunity of making a birdie, I made it," he said.

The 7th hole typified Chopra's round.

After putting his second shot at the par-five hole next to the green, he knocked his third past the flag with his putter and almost into a bunker on the other side.

Confronted with a 10m return putt, he coolly jammed the ball into the hole for a birdie four.

"I was too aggressive all round on that hole, but it went in," he said.

"That's how it was all day."

Chopra said the turnaround in his year came when he telephoned his Australian coach Kel Llewelyn after a frustrating lack of success.

Player and coach decided to take a more laid back approach and the result was last month's USPGA victory in Florida. (ANI)
