The world renowned New York Philharmonic will be performing in North Korean capital, Pyongyang in the month of February next year, that could turn out to be a major turn in the bilateral ties between the two countries.

The Philharmonic received an invitation from the North Korean Culture Ministry in August this year, and the US State Department authenticated the invitation and also helped in negotiating the terms of the visit.
"I hope it will be looked back upon as an event that helped bring that country back into the world," the International Herald Tribune quoted US Envoy for negotiations with North Korea, Christopher Hill, as saying.

Hill added that timing of the invitation was significant, that comes after a series of breakthroughs in a decade-long effort to have North Korea halt its nuclear program.

This is not for the first instance of US orchestra groups being used to further diplomacy. In 1973, the Philadelphia Orchestra travelled to China soon after President Nixon's historic visit, and earlier in 1956 the Boston Symphony was the first major American orchestra to travel to the Soviet Union.
