After Golden Globes cancellation, Oscars' fate under threat

Now that the striking Writers Guild of America have successfully obliterated the Golden Globes ceremony, the fate of the season's biggest event: the Academy Awards, is also under threat.

The axing of Golden Globes is a symbolic victory for the strikers and is now threatening the Oscars, which are slated for Feb 24.

Therefore, for Hollywood, the most immediate question is whether the strike will be settled before the event.

The Directors Guild of America is in informal conversations with Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.

Although reports claim that the negotiations between the two had not yielded much progress in the past few days, insiders said there were some optimistic signs that the two sides were making some headway and moving closer to setting a date for the start of formal bargaining.

Meanwhile, executives at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said firmly that Oscars would take place as per the schedule.

"We're moving ahead with our plans. That's our job, to prepare a show -- and that's what we're doing," Variety quoted Sid Ganis, Academy president, as saying.

Asked about the fate of the Oscars, one specialty distributor said: "It's like contemplating my own mortality. I know it's something I have to face, but not today." (ANI)
