Baghdad, Apr 14, (VOI) The Iraqi foreign ministry received a notice from the Jordanian government on Sunday that it will start granting Iraqis willing to enter Jordan entry visas as of mid-April, a ministry official said.

"The Iraqi foreign ministry was also notified that the Jordanian foreign ministry would open 13 offices in Baghdad and Iraqi provinces at a sum of 15,000 Iraqi dinars (more than 12 U.S. dollars) per form," Iraqi Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs Muhammad al-Hadj Hammoud told Aswat al-Iraq Voices of Iraq (VOI) by telephone.

"The Jordanian government did not specify certain categories of Iraqis to have a Jordanian entry visa and said it would give the sick and people with special needs priority to enter Jordanian territories," Hammoud said.

He pointed out that one of the reasons that prompted the activation of entry visas for Iraqis willing to enter neighboring Jordan was "the suffering Iraqis face when they are denied access into Jordanian territories at the joint borders."

Reports by international organizations affirm that a large number of Iraqis heading for Jordan are denied entry due to the tough procedures adopted by Jordanian authorities.

A recent international survey estimated the number of Iraqi refugees to Jordan due to acts of violence in the war-scarred country at more than 500,000.
