'Capello has to give Beckham his 100th cap'    2008-01-12 08:28:02

London, Jan 12 : England coach Fabio Capello will give David Beckham his 100th cap because he has no choice, former team manager Graham Taylor has said.
England coach Fabio Capello will give David Beckham his 100th cap because he has no choice, former team manager Graham Taylor has said.

Now new boss Capello must choose between heart and head over the selection of former skipper Beckham for next month's friendly match against Switzerland at Wembley, he said.

Taylor reckons that it is a no-brainer for the Italian and Beckham must be picked.

"If I was the England boss I'd play him otherwise you would not be getting off to a good start. We are told that Capello is his own man, makes his decisions and is not frightened of making any decision whatsoever," he said.

"But most people want Beckham to get to his 100th cap so if he makes the decision to leave Beckham out, it goes against him," he added.

That's the view of former England boss Graham Taylor, the man who famously called time on Gary Lineker's international career.

Lineker was just one short of Bobby Charlton's 49-goal England record and Taylor was pilloried for the decision to substitute him for Arsenal's Alan Smith against Sweden in 1992.

"Now we have Beckham, who has played for two of the biggest clubs in the world and 99 times for his country - so of course it would be fitting for him to have his 100th cap," Taylor said.

"If I was the England manager, I'd play him. Having not played politics in taking Lineker off, that damaged me," he added.

"So why have that at the start of your career when it's not going to do any harm?"

Taylor was talking as an ambassador of Chance to Shine, an initiative run by the Cricket Foundation through the ECB to bring cricket to primary schools, The Sun reported. (ANI)
