Wasteful Derby beaten again    2007-12-30 09:47:08

Derby County missed a penalty while 1-0 up before going down 2-1 to Blackburn Rovers Sunday.
Manchester (dpa) - Derby County missed a penalty while 1-0 up before going down 2-1 to Blackburn Rovers Sunday.

Derby are 10 points adrift of safety at the bottom of the Premier League, and look increasingly like suffering an immediate return to the Championship.

They have shown an improvement since Paul Jewell replaced Billy Davies as manager earlier this month, but squandered a golden opportunity to reduce the deficit.

Matt Oakley gave them a 27th-minute lead, and when Ryan Nelsen tripped Kenny Miller in the box 10 minutes later, Derby were contemplating what would have been just a second win of the season.

But Steve Howard's spot-kick was saved by Brad Friedel, and within two minutes Roque Santa Cruz had pulled Blackburn level as Derby keeper Price palmed out Benni McCarthy's shot.

Three minutes later David Bentley fired home from 25 metres, and Blackburn had completed a dramatic turnaround.
