Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, is still in love with her "handsome prince".

The duchess - who split from Prince Andrew in 1992, four years before they officially divorced - has confessed she will always have feelings for her former spouse but says they just did not work as husband and wife.

Sarah, who has two children, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, with Andrew, said: "My wedding day was the happiest day of my life. I still do love my handsome prince, but it just works better for us this way to keep things the way they are."

Sarah, who was cruelly dubbed 'The Duchess of Pork' when her weight ballooned after her marriage failed, also revealed how her "pet ponies" and "food" got her through her parents' divorce in 1972, when she was just 13-years-old.

Speaking to an audience at California's Civic Arts Plaza, in Thousands Oaks, on Monday (21.01.08), she added: "My only friend was food. My pet ponies and food got me thought. I learned how food can be so mind-altering and depressing."

The 48-year-old royal also praised her former mother-in-law Queen Elizabeth.

She is quoted in local newspaper Ventura County Star as saying: "She's a wonderful grandmother and I'm honoured to be part of her family I hope she doesn't retire. Long may she reign."
