The royal couple started their 11-day tour of the Caribbean at the Port of Spain, where they made their way of their luxury yacht, the Leander, to the sounds of traditional pipes.
Britain's Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, were welcomed by carnival dancers when they arrived in Trinidad yesterday (04.03.08).
The royal couple started their 11-day tour of the Caribbean at the Port of Spain, where they made their way of their luxury yacht, the Leander, to the sounds of traditional pipes.
Charles and Camilla walked along the dock, which was lined by dozens of sailors from the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force Coastguard.
They were then met by Trinidad's Chief of Defence, Staff Brigadier Edmond Dillon, who showed them to their seats in a marquee where they were treated to a cultural show beginning with a performance from calypso singer Denyse Plummer.
Before starting her singing, Denyse said: "Welcome to Trinidad, the land of steel band, calypso, carnival. A land where you find happy people of every creed and race."
The couple then visited the President of Trinidad and Tobago, Professor George Maxwell Richards and first lady Dr. Jean Ramjohn Richards.
Charles and Camilla will now travel to the nearby Tobago, before visiting St Lucia, Jamaica and the UK Overseas Territory of Montserrat.
It is hoped their official visit will help promote the subjects of sustainable development, environmental protection and youth opportunity.
