Academy Award winning director Sydney Pollack died on May 26 after a battle with cancer.

Pollack passed away at his home in Pacific Palisades in Los Angeles, surrounded by family, reports the BBC.

The 73-year-old had been diagnosed with cancer about ten months ago.

While best remembered as a director, Pollack began as an actor, and continued performing throughout his career, appearing in his last film, 'Michael Clayton,' in 2007.

From the beginning of his career, Pollack was identified with big names and big studios of Hollywood.

He won Oscars for producing and directing the epic romance 'Out of Africa,' starring Robert Redford and Meryl Streep, in 1985.

He also directed Dustin Hoffman in 'Tootsie,' and 'The Way We Were,' in which Redford partnered Barbra Streisand. (ANI)
