'Vendome', French cinema's first superhero is all set to jump over buildings and fly across miles to compete against Hollywood comic book blockbusters.
According to David Tomaszewski, 23, his Gallic superhero, Vendome, named after the chic Parisian square which houses the Ritz, will surely do entertain viewers now only in France but all round the world.
"I thought: why can't we too have a superhero, a French one in our cinemas?" The Telegraph quoted Tomaszewski, as saying.
He started it out as a low-budget short film shot with friends over four days in Paris, but now it will be transformed into full-fledged feature-length movie with a French producer.
"I want to do something really French not too inspired by Marvel comics," he said.
While he did not divulge much details about the story and his superhero's special powers, he claimed that the film was based on his original short film, which recorded at least 200,000 hits on internet.
The movie will show Vendome as a Parisian cross between Batman and Spiderman, who in a baggy black costume and a weird latex quaff, will fight Quasimodo and some angry gargoyles atop the bell tower of Notre Dame and will be rescuing Esmeralda.
The name Vendome, said the director, was chosen because it was very "Parisian" sounding, has "elegance and mystery," and rhymes with many Marvel comics characters like Venom, or Fantom.
George Lucas, Star Wars director, has already awarded Tomaszewski for his home-made films inspired by the legendary sci-fi franchise.
However, Tomaszewski claimed that he did not notice Internet viewers' comments saying "love the clip, shame about the costume."
He said: "We did what we could given the small budget. It was a cheap suit, but now we're putting a lot of money into improving it."
Besides, "the rubbery quality has a certain charm," he added. (ANI)
