Montreal (dpa) - Canadian jazz pianist and composer Oscar Peterson died Sunday at his home, the online edition of the Toronto Star reported, citing the Canadian broadcaster CBC.
Considered one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time, the 82- year-old Peterson died of kidney failure.
Peterson's career spanned 50 years, starting in small jazz clubs in Montreal and leading him to the world's great concert halls. He recorded nearly 200 albums and won eight Grammy awards.
Despite a stroke in 1993 that left him partially paralyzed for two years, Peterson continued to perform until earlier this year, when failing health forced him to cancel an appearance at the Toronto Jazz Festival.
