(TORONTO, ON - February 26, 2008) Canadian-based Zerofootprint.net today announced the launch of a social networking Internet portal for the City of Toronto that enables its residents, businesses and community organizations to measure their carbon footprint and share tips and ideas that they can implement to reduce their impact on the environment. The customized local site is an easily-replicated model for individual communities around the world.
The innovative partnership was first announced at the C40 Large Cities Climate Summit New York in May 2007 by Toronto Mayor David Miller. He laid down a challenge to all cities around the world to join the new web-based initiative. And others are coming aboard. To date Seattle and Boulder, Colorado are on-line with other cities around the United States gearing up to join.
Ron Dembo, Founder and CEO of Zerofootprint said, "Engaging people across the world is an important part of a global solution. Carbon in the atmosphere is at the core of the climate change problem. We must all do our part and reduce our carbon output. To do that governments, cities, schools, corporations and individuals will need to measure and manage their footprint. Zerofootprint harnesses the power of the internet, technology and social networking to engage organizations and individuals in this process. We give them a measurement tool -- and even more important a course of action that they can take to reduce their carbon footprint. "
Zerofootprint's aim is to create a global social networking community focused on combating climate change. "We want to help people and organizations address climate change in a profitable yet sustainable way," said Dembo. "Our agreements with cities will allow us to focus with special energy to effect change in a very vulnerable ecology."
Recently nominated for a "Crunchie Award" as most likely to change the world and also a Canadian Geographic Environment Award, Zerofootprint taps into the power of Web 2.0, using technology and social networking to engage organizations and individuals in the climate change process, and to ensure that each user gets customized solutions that reflect their carbon output. Zerofootprint is on a mission to save the planet.
